SANEF IS SHOCKED BY ATTACK ON JOURNALIST.
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has expressed its shock following an attack on a journalist within the Parliamentary precinct today.
In a disturbing video, which is now being widely circulated – EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu is seen physically attacking Netwerk24 photographer Adrian de Kock.
De Kock said he asked Shivambu for comment on the disciplinary inquiry against Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille. He said Shivambu declined to comment but then went on to demand that he delete a picture he had taken of him.
In the video, Shivambu accompanied by two other unidentified men, is heard demanding that De Kock delete the picture while he and another man violently grabbed the photographer. Shivambu is also seen slapping the photographer. The video also shows them pushing De Kock around and trying to remove the camera from around his neck.
Shivambu later walks away, leaving the two individuals behind as they continued to harass De Kock.
SANEF condemns the incident in the strongest possible terms and is extremely disappointed by Shivambu’s actions.
This type of intolerant behaviour is unacceptable in a democracy.
As a member of parliament he is entrusted with protecting our hard earned media freedom and freedom of expression as is enshrined in our constitution.
He should lead by example and champion journalists’ protected right to do their work without fear or favour.
It is unacceptable for a Member of Parliament to intimidate a journalist whatever the circumstances.
SANEF will take the matter up with the EFF.
We welcome the fact that De Kock will go to the police to lay a charge of assault against Shivambu. We call on authorities to thoroughly investigate the complaint so that Shivambu can be held accountable for his actions.
We have repeatedly called on police to assist in this regard and despite the numerous and often public attacks on journalists, to date no perpetrator has been brought to book.
The failure by authorities to prosecute these attacks on journalists allows for a culture of impunity to continue.
