Among Sanef’s key endeavours is the work of addressing racial and gender diversity in the media so that it more accurately reflects South Africa’s demographics.
Given South Africa’s history of racial and gender inequality, the topic of diversity in the newsroom and elsewhere in the media is often fraught with controversy. Nevertheless, Sanef remains a resolute proponent of equality in the media.
From 2003 to 2005, Sanef conducted an extensive research project into racial and gender diversity in South African newsrooms.
The research, The Glass Ceiling Project, examined how racial and gender inequalities affect both women and men. Sanef subsequently implemented an action list aimed at addressing the problems.
The research findings can be downloaded in the publications section.
