Joint Media Statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF)

Representatives of the SAPS and a delegation from SANEF met in Pretoria today. The meeting resolved to establish a working committee of senior police communications officers and journalists to deal with disputes and other issues that arise in reporting police related activities.

In recent months, both institutions had complained about incidents that had caused friction and inhibited communication. The meeting was held at the request of both SANEF and the SAPS. Journalists voiced their complaints about police conduct and difficulties in gaining information and the police voiced their criticism of the media.

The working committee consisting of six members each from the police and SANEF will meet monthly to discuss complaints and other issues as they arise.

Issues discussed included the management of crime scenes, the access of media to court proceedings, the security legislation concerning the coverage of national key points as well as improving channels and expertise of communication.
