Sanef calls on South Africans to support “Black Tuesday”

28 November 2011

MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has called on South Africans to support the “Black Tuesday” campaign tomorrow.

The National Press Club decided to declare another “Black Tuesday” tomorrow – one week after Parliament voted in favour of the Protection of State Information Bill.

Chairperson of Sanef, Mondli Makhanya, said: “We agree that it’s important to keep the awareness going. We also appeal to media houses to continue highlighting the problems and dangers of the POIB.”

Sanef said it supported a call to have pickets outside media houses between 12 and 12.30pm tomorrow.

Senior editors are scheduled to meet with Cosatu General-Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi and representatives of the Right2Know campaign this week to discuss the POIB.

Sanef said that while the activism continued, it will continue to “engage” government and other stakeholders. “It’s important that the talking continues.”
