The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) at its Council Meeting in Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth at the weekend resolved to make an urgent written submission to President Thabo Mbeki over his immediate signing of the Films and Publications Amendment Bill into law.

The SA National Editors’ Forum joins democratic institutions throughout the world in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on December 10 1948. The declaration contains what is regarded as the key clause upholding freedom of expression and freedom of the Press - Article 19.

Sanef, at its Annual General Meeting in Durban on 27 June 2009, expressed its deep concern about the ongoing crisis at the SABC and called on parliament and Government to restore stability, credibility and sound financial capacity at the public broadcaster as a matter of great urgency.

At its council meeting in Durban on 1 December 2008, Sanef noted and condemned the utterances of journalists expressing preference to cover certain political parties and not others. Sanef wishes to place on record that journalists are expected to adhere to the press code that commits all journalists to report objectively without fear or favour.
